"Political toddlers, para-troopers ruined the party we had created brick by brick' | Furious Karra finally resigns from PDP, Parliament | | Hyder Ali Early Times Report srinagar, Sept 15: In a major setback to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, one of its founding members and veteran MP, Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday quit the PDP and his seat in the Parliament. "My conscience cannot take it any longer. My heart is bleeding and my soul is crying for the people of my homeland. Hence taking a call of my conscience and as a mark of protest on moral grounds against the brutalities of the BJP at center and State government's complete sellout and surrender before them, I have decided to disassociate myself from the primary membership of Peoples Democratic Party and from the Membership of Parliament to which I was elected from Srinagar's parliament Constituency in 2014 on PDP ticket," Karra told a crowded press conference at his Shiv Pora residence here. Karra, who had been having a strained relationship with the PDP leadership for the past over a year, since the party went for alliance with BJP, said: "I shall be forwarding my resignation letter to the honorable Speaker of the Parliament as well. Today the Central and the state government policies of unabated genocide in the worst form on inhuman brutality, continued denial mode towards the dangerous ground realities, their insensitive and adhocist approach towards Kashmir issue and their continued blatant and open policy of dealing with Kashmiris by way of oppressive, repressive and suppressive majors are other reasons for registering my protest," Karra said while reading out his long, 7-page statement before the media persons. "In the end," he said, "I am leaving it to conscience of all other members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council , to decide whether they would like to side with their helpless people or let this bloodshed continue perpetrated by RSS driven BJP and facilitated by PDP," Karra, who defeated National Conference stalwart Dr Farooq Abdullah at the previous parliament elections of 2014 told reporters. The veteran politician said he had "relentlessly toiled" to build PDP "Brick by brick from the very first day of its formation" but that new entrants to the party in the past few years ruined it. In a veiled attack on PDP leaders like Naeem Akhter, Karra said "political toddlers and political paratroopers" have marginalized thousands of party workers who had been working selflessly for the party. "Though PDP's base was fast eroding with every passing day in these sixteen months, I still continued with my efforts of saving PDP and the people both, as I didn't want to be seen someone destabilizing his own house. But I must admit, I failed in the endeavor," he said. Stating that the past over two months of unrest in Kashmir proved the last nail in the coffin, Karra said: "Every single day Kashmiris are being butchered, fathers carrying coffins of their young ones, hundreds being blinded, and thousands being injured. The number of injured is outnumbering hospital capacities and the number of arrested in outnumbering lockups." Expressing sympathies with the families "who lost their loved ones to the naked brutalities of security forces, and others including pellet blinded, wounded and arrested", Karra said PDP was on the path of aggressors. Later Karra tactfully ridiculed at Chief Minister, Mehboboa Mufti, who sometime back remained in news for her invite to media persons for tea at a press conference. Karra ensured to personally request media persons to have tea, with a typical one-liner: "It's not that Cheviv Chaya Waya. I humbly request you join us for a cup of tea." |
