SRINAGAR, Oct 13: Facing criticism from the common masses for continuous shutdown over the past more than three months now the separatist leaders of Kashmir valley have barring one day given relaxation in their fresh protest calendar on daily basis.
According to the protest schedule drawn up by the separatist leaders there will be relaxation in the evenings during the shutdown on all days from October 15 to October 20. The schedule that would be applicable from October 14 has come as a breather for the people since in the past the relaxation would be maximum for three days in a whole week.
The separatists have through the schedule said that people can carry out their normal activities duringOctober 15-October 20 from 5 PM to 7 AM on the next day. In the previous protest calendar there was relaxation for just three days in the evening with call for complete shutdown on the other four days.
It would be in place to mention here that separatists are under pressure from the people in general to call off the protest in the form of protest calendar so that life returns to normal in the valley. Majority of the people in Kashmir want normalcy to return so that they can continue with their daily chores of life.
Only last week a group of transporters had assembled at the Press Enclave here and registered their protest against the continuous shutdown. The transporters said that since they are suffering huge losses they are not in a position to feed their children and other family members. They urged the separatists to call off the protest and ensure that normalcy returns to Kashmir.
Although, the shopkeepers across the length and breadth of valley are able to open their shops for some hours in the morning and evening, there is no such provision for the transporters. The long distance buses, mini-buses and Tata Sumos are lying idle for more than three months now. The owners of these vehicles are suffering huge financial losses and it is getting difficult for them to make the two ends meet.
Most of the transporters have taken loans from the banks and with the operations being suspended they are not able to pay their monthly installments towards their respective banks. Even though the transporters are facing numerous problems due to the ongoing unrest the separatists have remained indifferent to their problems so far. Instead of mitigating the problems of transporters the separatists have asked people to contribute Rs. 500 for the transporters. This is despite the fact that people in general are feeling the heat on financial front across the valley due to continuous shutdown.
It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley is on boil for the past 97 days now. The unrest started after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district on July 8 in the evening. The violence that followed Burhan's killing has so far led to death of 89 persons.
