SRINAGAR, Jan 26: Notwithstanding colourful Republic Day parades at all district headquarters and major towns across the Valley, National Conference-led coalition government today achieved a dubious distinction as, for the first time in the last 20 years of the political turmoil, there was no unfurling of the national flag at Lalchowk. In response to a call from different separatist organizations, Kashmir observed near-total shutdown and groups of youngsters clashed with Police and paramilitary forces at several places in the summer capital and few other towns.

Udhampur, Jan 26- To further improve relations between India and China, a border personnel meeting was held at Chushul today, coinciding the Republic Day celebrations, and agreed to join hands in contributing to peace, stability and development of the region in consonance with Border Peace and Tranquility Agreements.
The Chinese delegation was received by the Indian Delegation leader Brigadier YK Joshi. After the reception, the Indian National flag was hoisted and both the Chinese and Indian delegations saluted the tricolor.

Kalpakkam, Jan 26: Two more fast breeder reactors of 500 MWe capacity each would be set up here by 2020, a top official of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) said Tuesday.
"In addition to the prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR), work on which is nearing completion, we have planned to construct two more reactors of this kind," IGCAR Director Dr Baldev Raj told reporters here.
He said the work on the two reactors was expected to start by 2014.
On the ongoing work on the Rs 3,500-crore first FBR, Raj said the physical and civil construction was almost complete and it would be commissioned by October 2011.

New Delhi: It was a chilly and foggy Republic Day in the northern region today as the death of five more persons due to the cold took the total toll this winter to 550.
All the fresh deaths were reported from Uttar Pradesh where two persons died in Ghazipur and one death each was reported from Bhadoi, Basti and Auraiya.
Fog at many places played spoilsport at the Republic Day celebrations and in the national capital, the weather conditions led to the cancellation of a flypast by four Mi-17 helicopters which were to shower flowers on spectators. Visibility on the Rajpath was reduced to near zero level.

New Delhi: With the global recovery off to a stronger start, Indian economy is projected to grow at 7.7 per cent in 2010, 1.3 percentage points higher than forecast earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday.
India, that recorded a growth rate of 7.3 per cent in 2008, dipping down to an estimated 5.9 per cent in 2009, is projected to grow at a still marginally higher 7.8 per cent in 2011, up 0.5 percentage points from last year's forecast, the IMF said in an update of World Economic Outlook (WEO).

Pakistan Army personnel led by a Colonel-rank officer presented boxes of sweets to Indian Army officers at forward defence locations and crossing-points at Chakan-Da-Bagh and Tatapani in Poonch and Mendhar sectors along the LoC.

Jammu, Jan 26: One jawan was injured when Pakistani troops violated the border truce by resorting to unprovoked firing for several hours as BSF personnel foiled two infiltration bids in Jammu and Kashmir today.
The latest ceasefire violation came even as the country was celebrating the Republic Day. There were 16 infiltration bids and six truce violations along the Indo-Pak border in this month.

Jammu, Jan 26: All forces holding contrary beliefs in Kashmir should come forward for a meaningful dialogue, Governor N N Vohra said today, noting that India’s liberal democratic framework provides space for divergent opinions.
He also said the security forces will have to be on tight vigil in view of increasing infiltration over the past weeks but asked them ensure that no law-abiding citizen is harassed.

New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) found itself in the eye of storm for putting up a distorted map of India on its official website.
As India celebrated its 60th Republic Day, the blunder came to light forcing the embarrassed CGF officials to correct the map and apologise to the nation for the mistake.
"It was a mistake and we apologise for it," CGF CEO Mike Hooper said.
