No simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly polls in J&K upset Opposition | | |

Jammu, Mar 16: Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have strongly criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its decision not to hold simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the Union Territory.
Former Chief Minister and president of the National Conference, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, expressed disappointment with the ECI's decision, stating, "Unfortunately, the ECI has once again ignored the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to have their government." He further added, "I feel very sad after the announcement of the ECI. On one side, the government is trying to implement the policy of 'one nation, one election,' but on the other hand, this policy is not implemented in J&K."
Dr. Abdullah questioned the denial of the right to choose their own government for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially when four states are going for both Parliamentary and Assembly elections simultaneously.

The Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir will be held after the Lok Sabha polls as organising both simultaneously is not viable from the security point of view, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said on Saturday as he announced the schedule of the general election and some Assembly and bypolls.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha polls, the world’s biggest election exercise, will kick off on April 19 with the counting of votes set to take place on June 4 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes a bid for a third consecutive term in office.
Announcing the election schedule on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said over 97 crore voters – 49.7 crore males and 47.1 crore females – were eligible to cast their vote in the polling process spread over 44 days and across 10.5 lakh polling booths.
The elections will begin on April 19 followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1, Kumar said at a press conference.

Srinagar, Mar 16: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) charged two accused in the Kokernag-Anantnag encounter case on Saturday. The encounter now probed by the NIA began on the night of September 13, 2023, when the senior officers came under heavy fire as they approached the suspected hideout in the Gadole forest in Kokernag.
Due to the intense firefight, an Army Colonel, a Major, and a Deputy Superintendent of J&K Police were killed. During the initial shootout, another soldier was also injured, and his body was found on the third day of the operation.
