Ice lingam at Amarnath shrinks: Official
6/27/2007 11:53:49 PM
AMARNATH (J&K), JUNE 27 The naturally formed ice lingam at the holy cave shrine of Amarnath has shrunk to one-tenth of its size after a rapid meltdown and may disappear in a few days if the mercury continues to rise, a top shrine official said today. "It (the ice lingam) has shrunk to one-tenth of the size and may last just several days if mercury continue to shoot up," Director of the holy cave N K Raina told visiting reporters here. Raina, however, said it is a normal phenomenon. Weather affects the shape and size of the ice lingam. Raina said due to rising temperature around the cave shrine the size and height of the lingam has reduced considerably. Nearly 12-foot ice lingam had been formed in the 200 cubic-meter cave on June 9 but had reduced to 1/10 of its size today. It may not last for more time because of the heat, he said. Raina, however, said that the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) expected over four lakh devotees this year despite the lingam not withstanding the weather vagaries. He said it has been witnessed in the past that the lingam does not exis...

Separatists, on the other hand, trying create a niche in Jammu
6/27/2007 11:48:25 PM
Sanjay Khajuria Jammu June 27 Recent bashing of reformed militant Zaffar Bhat by Shiv Sena (Thackrey) has once again raised doubts about accelerated activities from the separatist elements in the Jammu region. Now, people in Jammu are questioning about the endeavor of separatist elements toiling new grounds in Jammu in particular when the so-called proponents of Jammu’s cause lie in deep slumber. Not only hardliner Geelani has visited Jammu but moderate Hurriyat leader late A G Lone too had visited the winter capital. The separatist elements have never been welcomed in Jammu only because of their anti-Indian sloganeering. If recalled here, each separatist leader has faced the ire of...

6/27/2007 11:45:34 PM
JAMMU | JUNE 27 Both the Congress and the PDP have toughened their stands on the issue of demilitarization and repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Day in and day out PDP Patron and his main associates keep on harping on the need for cutting the strength of troops and for scrapping of AFSPA which is being countered by none other than the Defence Minister, AK Antony. Groupism galore in Jammu Kashmir Congress
6/27/2007 11:45:11 PM
JAMMU | JUNE 27 As in charge party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, when M M Jacob, reaches Srinagar he would be confronted with an unreported factionalism in the state unit of the Congress. Besides deciding whether Peerzada Mohd Syed will continue to be the PCC Chief or introduce one-man one post formula, Jacob will try to bring about reconciliation among senior congress leaders. Both in the Kashmir valley and in the Jammu region each senior party leader has a lobby within the congress party. While Abdul Gani Vakil, vice president PCC, is the lone congress leader who has managed to organize series of public meeting and workers conferences in several areas of the valley, Taj Mohiuddin, Pee...

War against corruption…wah, wah!!!
Sacked officer is PDP's state secretary
6/27/2007 11:25:34 PM
NIRBHAY JAMMUAL Jammu, June 27: What describes best the war against corruption has left the common man confused. Whether the present Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's jehad against corruption is real or that of his predecessor Mufti Mohammad Sayeed? The public servant accused of corrupt practices and misappropriation of official authorities have been equally punished and rehabilitated by both. The differences is that those officers pulled by Mufti were rehabilitated by Azad and the others penalised by Azad are being politically propped up by Mufti. It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's much publicised "war against corruption" is a loud campaign, but h...

6/27/2007 11:24:24 PM
ET SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Jammu, June 26: Politics may be powerful, but bureaucracy is supreme. Or it is simply the good being the better. After a prolonged difference of opinion and strong insistence from a senior Congress Minister, the state cabinet which met last on June 11, had to defer a decision on transfer of a particular officer. What transpired overnight is a matter of sheer guess work. The will of the senior Congress minister was accommodated and transfer order of three senior IAS officers, in an effort to dislocate the once demanded by the Minister, was issued by the next day. However, interestingly, the order could not be implemented fully. Even before the govern...
