Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 20: Traffic remained disrupted on otherwise busy roads of Jammu today , albeit for a noble cause. As the protests against gang rape incident in national capital are getting louder across country and abroad, anger and outrage flared up on Jammu roads which remained swelled up with a sizable number of students from colleges and university, both boys as well as girls who stood together, blocked the traffic while calling for stringent laws and death penalty for anyone committing such ghastly crimes.
A day after vehement demonstrations and protests were witnessed in almost all parts of the country, Jammu students, not resisting the pain and anger over the act of cruelty against a para medical student too joined the loud outcry for safety of girls by making existing laws harsher and timely disposal of already pending such cases as a deterrent measure to check this heinous crime. From slogans demanding protection of women and girl students in particular in all the cities ……, making cities safer by a vigilant and responsible police force to the loud and unanimous call from even boys to hang the rapists….., the student protestors, staying away from classes and respective institutions assembled on the roads to demonstrate and express anger against the incident that has shocked and shamed the entire country.
While it was mainly the huge chunk of girl students that converged with loads of anger and resentment on Jammu roads, blocking even the Highway traffic, what came as a pacifying gesture was the meaningful presence of boys at a number of places, from MAM college as well as from the Jammu University. The anti rape protests reflecting the bad mood and anger of young girls spread even to main crossings and bazaars within in no time. As the protesting girls forwarded their demonstrations to main roads, traffic remained disrupted at a number of places almost simultaneously. At some places, it looked like a sea of girl students in uniform having emerged on the roads vehemently expressing their resentment against the cruel act.
While vehicle owners showed patience while remaining stuck up for quite some time amidst choked roads, the police officials too acted with a sense of restraint, for change perhaps sensing any harsh action or any move to stop the girls would invite wrath of protests that would turn situation ugly. In their possible management of the huge crowd, the police tried to pacify the students particularly at places like Bikram Chowk and Dogra Chowk where the numbers swelled up from all sides. Without caring for disrupted traffic and undaunted by police officials , some of them women cops, the students clogged the crossings and blocked the roads meaningfully to show and demonstrate their anger ,perhaps for the first time in such a big way. The moot question however remains will that move our Government and authorities, who have yet to come out with any formal word of condemnation….?
