1/9/2013 11:30:34 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Jan 9 : Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, turned white for a brief period following light snowfall early this morning.
The upper heights, including world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort of Pahalgam had moderate to heavy snowfall since last evening, attracting film units from South India. However, snowfall has increased the minimum temperature, providing much needed relief to the people who were shivering for the past about a fortnight due to dry and cold weather. Roof and vehicle tops, open fields and roads had turned white as people woke up this morning in Srinagar and its adjoining areas because of fresh light snowfall this morning. However, the snow melted after sun came out from under the clouds as the day progressed. This has however, provided much needed relief to the people as the minimum temperature improved considerably. Against yesterdays minus 5.5 degree, coldest night of the season so far, the minimum was minus 0.3 degree, a Met department spokesman said. He said due to snowfall the minimum temperature has improved in the Kashmir valley considerably. Barring the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg the night temperature in the Kashmir valley was above normal. Met spokesman said at Gulmarg the minimum was minus 8.4 degree, recording improvement of two notchs against yesterday when it was minus minus 10 degree. The normal at the ski resort is minus 8 during this period of the winter. It was snowing, much to the delight of tourists, skiers and adventure lovers who had come from different parts of the country and abroad, a hotel owner told. He said a film unit from South had come to shoot a film song in Gulmarg. Despite below freezing temperature the entire unit was upbeat to shoot in Kashmir.
