| Govt's edifice of 'achievements' rests on previous coalition's foundations | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 9: While Omar Abdullah led coalition for the last few days is tiring itself on counting and highlighting the so called achievements made during the past four years of 'marriage' between NC and Congress, the celebrating spirit and euphoria is actually based on the strong foundations of development and era of progress on all fronts by the previous coalition between PDP and Congress. The existing coalition has nothing new in its kitty and is banking on the works started or partially completed in that era. Illustrative ads dotted with pictures of leaders like UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh flaunted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, contents loaded with heavy adjectives spun in solacing slogans of peace and prosperity look beautiful against coloured and bold messages of the Government about its intents for future. However, a closer and deeper peep shatters the dreamy picture woven in these huge advertisements ' cooked ' and 'concocted' with a long list of achievements that have preceded the full page advertisement in most of the newspapers few days ago. So the NC led coalition is celebrating four years of Government albeit on a false and self aggrandizement note for which there are no takers among masses, leave alone opposition which is simply mocking at it. Omar led Government is harping in the achievements listed in ads about work done by this coalition on peace and development fronts and it is on this premise the Chief Minister wants his performance to be judged by the people. The claims are so fragile that even a commoner would puncture the balloon without even touching it. For they know peace in the State has come after hard and consistent efforts of previous coalition with practical steps on ground invested with conviction and courage. Peace is the outcome in form of dividends of such steps taken during PDP led coalition. As for progress report on development front, Omar Government is also counting the points which are already scored by the previous Government and people have registered in their minds. No matter the Omar led coalition praises itself with adjectives like remarkable and visionary achievements, the reality speaks for itself. A small instance on the development front in Health Sector punctures the balloon so loudly that even naive and ignorant would laugh away. In Jammu the bragging and boasting about Super Specialty hospital is hollow for it is the Union Health Ministry which keeps a close watch and apparently the credit would be attributed to Centre as and when it gets functional. Union Health Minister brazenly and boldly keeps it to his 'territory' and State Government without any inhibitions counts achievement on this . In Kashmir valley the two major Hospitals at district level at Anantnag and Baramulla on which Government is counting achievement are actually in a pathetic condition. The foundation in these projects was laid by PDP led Government and some works also started before it went out of power, but the present Government for whatever reasons is allocating nominal funds to both that if the same pace continues these would not get functional in even 10 years. Same is the scenario on roads and bridges front on which the foundation was laid years back and the present Government is only allocating funds from Centre. The present Government has not opened educational institutions with brisk pace and passion the previous coalition did on need basis. On political front, the NC-Congress coalition has faltered so badly which is why it has chosen not to touch this subject on the long list of achievements. While it has deliberately chosen to bury the recommendations made by most significant Working Group on Centre State relations led by late Justice Sagheer Ahmad, the Cabinet Sub Committee set up by the Government to study this report has gone into oblivion, despite the fact that report is in favour of NC's Autonomy plank. Congress has brazenly befooled the masses by making a hollow and shallow talk about empowerment of Panchayats by incorporating 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments. Most vital step that would have ushered in era of development in urban areas, holding of Urban Bodies polls hangs in uncertainty. |
