| NC revolts against India, demands independence | | Will Cong continue to be part of Govt? | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 9: The National Conference (NC), which has been ruling the State in alliance with the Congress party and which is politically, constitutionally and morally bound to defend India and advance its interests in the State, yesterday revolted against the country and demanded independence from India. The demand was made by the party's permanent general secretary and a close relative of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Sheikh Nazir, in a meeting in which - apart from party workers -- Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Ali Mohammad Sagar, Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Habba Kadal Shameema Firdous, MLA Zadibal Peer Afaq and MLC Ali Mohammad were also present. The meeting took place at party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subah, Srinagar, and was addressed, among others, by Sheikh Nazir. Condemning New Delhi, Nazir said: "Kashmiris were always 'deceived and backstabbed' by New Delhi on one pretext or other. We still don't know why we were ditched. Pandit Nehru made a promise to the people of Kashmir at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar (on November 18, 1947) that when peace prevails, people would be given a right to choose their fate. But this promise was never fulfilled. Instead, New Delhi jailed the tallest leader of J&K, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, in 1952. It is high time for Government of India to fulfill the promise made by Pandit Nehru," he said. "Autonomy is the basic right of Kashmiris. We will not surrender on this. Autonomy means Khudmukhtari, which means independence. There should be no intervention of anybody in our rights and duties. We have to strive hard for our rights. Many conspiracies were hatched against the NC leadership. Many attempts were made to destabilize Farooq Abdullah Government. And now efforts are on to malign the image of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah," Nazir also said. Besides, ailing Nazir bemoaned the decline of the NC and asked the people of Kashmir "why didn't you think at the time of voting in favour of other party (read PDP) in 2008?" "It was a disgrace for NC that the party has come down from 68 seats in State Assembly in 1996 to only 28 at present. It is high time for us to strengthen our roots and to introspect. If you (workers) want to see your problems addressed in time, give us a full mandate in next election," he said. Sheikh Nazir's attack on India was blistering and the demand for plebiscite/ Khudmukhtari/independence that he made in the presence of NC Ministers and legislators was out-and-out seditious. The very presence of a couple of Ministers and a few party legislators in the meeting where Nazir delivered hate-India speech was a clear indication that the NC-led Government and the NC are working in tandem to achieve their break-India objective. Now that those from the Government have accorded legitimacy to the party general secretary's hate-India speech by being present in the meeting, it is time for the State Governor to use his Constitutional powers vested in him and discharge his obligations towards the nation by initiating action aimed at bringing to justice Sheikh Nazir and others of his ilk. He needs to send a detailed report to the President of India on what was said by Nazir and its implications. India is not a banana republic. The State Governor has to prove it by action. The Congress also has to act and act very fast not only in its own interest but also in the larger national interest. It has to act in a manner that establishes that it cannot have any kind of truck with a party that preaches sedition and demands independence from India. Will the Congress continue to be part of the seditionist NC? |
