Lohri festival merely symbolic gesture
1/10/2013 12:25:03 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 9: The Tourism Department is living in either delusion or is ignorant of the cultural history when it has decided to have Lohri festival confined to only Raghunath Bazaar only. The festival is celebrated across the Jammu region especially in districts in the plains.
The department by scoring brownie points or for taking credit to have assuaged the sentiments of the Jammu decided to have it in the area where even locals can't get together because of the paucity of the space.
Though, the place had its historical moorings, but in the present times, it doesn't have space to accommodate to people who intends to come there with their families in their own personal vehicles.
The department should have pondered over these issues and should have after careful deliberations should have choosen the place which can fulfill all such criterias.
It should have taken lesson from the public festivals celebrated in foreign countries, which are always celebrated in the open space thus ensuring that there is huge public participation.
The department has probably succumbed to the influential lobby and in the process will be spending huge sum of money without any desired results.
The department should atleast decided to hold event of such scale and nature in other places especially in rural areas also, where it's celebrated in much grand scale.
It should have send the message that it is sensitive to the feelings of the all people and is also equally conscious of celebrating it in truly holistic manner, rather than just symbolic gestures, which it presently seems to be doing.
The department had in the past also done same exercise in the past, and it's public knowledge that was confined to just few people who wanted to be seen close to the influential and powerful people rather than the general public, who could have really benefited with such and exercise.'
