| Verma demands reservation for OBC in BDC, Municipal Polls | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Akhnoor, Jan 9 : The Vice Chairman of State Advisory and Development of Other Backward Classes (OBC), Kuldeep Raj Verma on Wednesday demanded reservation for the OBC people in the Block Development Council elections and municipal body elections. Verma said this while addressing a huge meeting of the Congress workers and panches and sarpanches of Khour block in Akhnoor. While hailing the Congress and National Conference coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir for its developmental activities without any disparity in all the regions of the State, he said government has been focusing on development with the equal distribution of funds to all the three regions in the interest of the State. He further claimed that the coalition has brought peace in the State which needs to be maintained for the progress and prosperity of J&K. He also informed the participants in the meeting that he had gone to Delhi and met AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Minister Shushil Kumar Shinde and other national leaders where he highlighted the demands of the refugees and insisted on their one time settlement. He also hailed the Member Parliament and senior Congress leader Madan Lal Sharma. Earlier, locals raised various problems being faced by them. The locals of Khour block demanded that the government should enhance the reservation quota of OBC people from 2 percent in J&K to 27 percent as per the national level reservation for the benefit of the other backward class people. Meanwhile, a deputation of West Pakistan refugees alleged that the OBC certificates have not been issued to them due to which their children have been facing problems including land ahead of fence is not being cultivated since 1999. Among those who participated in the meeting include Congress general secretary Rano Devi, Gain Singh, Sarpanch Niku Ram, Sarpanch Swaran Singh and others. |
