EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 9 : N. N. Vohra, Governor Jammu and Kashmir, has emphasized the need for character building and reviving and reinvigorating ethical and moral values to establish a balanced and harmonious society. The Governor, as Chief Guest, was addressing the Valedictory Session of the two-day seminar on "Unity in Diversity", organized by the Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu, as part of the 150th Birthday celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, at the Police Auditorium, Gulshan Ground, here today. The Governor observed that Swami Vivekananda was not only an eminent Indian but one of the most outstanding thinkers and philosophers who had a visionary view of the universe. He observed that Swamiji had perceived more than a century ago that if there is no peace and stability there cannot be any development and growth. The Governor said that India, with more than 5000 years of recorded history, is the best example of Unity in Diversity, where people from different religions and faiths, speaking different languages, have lived together for centuries. He said that this spirit has to be rediscovered and strengthened. Referring to the various major components of the teachings and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, the Governor said that, in today's context character building and the restoration of ethical values are very important. Referring to the recent heinous gang-rape incident in Delhi, he stressed the importance of concerted efforts being made to reinvigorate moral and ethical values in the society. He suggested to Dr. S. S. Bloeria, President, Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu, that, if possible, in future such seminars could be perhaps more profitably organized in the Universities and Colleges where a large number of students could get the opportunity of participating in the discussions and listening to eminent monks and scholars. He observed that with the restoration of a stable society we could perhaps overcome many of the problems we are facing today.
Dr. S. S. Bloeria, President, Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu, who is Vice Chancellor of the Central University, Jammu, in his welcome address, gave details of the activities of the Jammu Mission and those planned for the future. He also dwelt on the salient features of Swami Vivekananda's philosophy.
Swami Girijeshananda presented a Vote of Thanks. He thanked the Governor for taking keen interest in the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu.
The function commenced with the invocation and concluded with the Group Prayer by the Monks of the Ramakrishna Order.
