| Government has to wake up and act | | Surveys alone won't help | | Early Times Report jammu, Feb 7: The economic survey has already commenced and the Chief Minister has wished the Directorate of Economics and Statistics good luck. According to him, data collected through such exercises helps in good governance. The Chief Minister is right. Data must be handy to frame policies but this is not the only survey that has been undertaken by the State. How Government has utilized the data collected during previous surveys? Jammu and Kashmir continues to be at the bottom of private and Government investment in the industrial sector when compared to other States. Reports indicate that during the last one year Gujarat has registered an investment of over Rs. 49,000 crores followed by Andhra Pradesh with Rs. 10,000 crores, Maharashtra Rs. 7,000 crores and Punjab over Rs. 1100 crores. The figures reflect the failure of the Government. Militancy cannot be taken as an excuse in contemporary times. The Government, itself has been boasting of an improved security situation. Apart from, collecting data, the Government has to act swiftly at times to promote industry. The Samba Industrial area has been held hostage by the truck owners who have formed a so-called union and demand hefty sums from entrepreneurs for transportation of raw material and finished goods. The Government has been watching it without coming to the rescue of the entrepreneurs. The Government has to bear in mind that it cannot sit idle while the economic survey is conducted. Till fresh data becomes available, the Government has to put in efforts to invite outside investment and also help the existing institutions. |
