| Arresting youth for silencing girls just half- hearted action | | | Early Times Report jammu, Feb 7: The arrest of three youth who threatened the Kashmir Band girl, online, is a half hearted attempt by the State Government, which was forced to act after public outrage and media pressure. The arrest was made about five-day after the incident, which should have been done immediately and even the delayed FIR was lodged only after the incident was played out in national and international media. The Chief Minister while complimenting the police for the arrest said there was no need to arrest Grand Mufti saying there was no need as he had done no wrong. The teenage girls were made to quit after the Fatwa was issued by Mufti, which though has religious sanction but does amount to infringing on the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and upheld by many judgments of the Supreme Court. The CM may have logic in not getting Mufti arrested but he should have shown the courage in taking on Dakhtran Millat leader Aasiya Andrabi. Aasiya Andrabi doesn't enjoy religious sanction and is known for her hardliner and separatists stand. It was she who had issued threat on social boycott of parents of the girls and in a discussion at English news channel had openly spoken about her feeling and support to Pakistan. It was clear case of anti-national activity and deemed to charged under criminal section. Her arrest was also warranted for spreading hate and indirectly intimidating young teenage girls, forcing them to give up their shame. CM should have shown guts and spine and in getting Aasiya arrested, who had in the past also done such act by barging into beauty parlours and also painting girls black and also for past unsuccessful stand against girls for wearing jeans. The Chief Minister in his tweete had said : :Shame on those who claim freedom of speech via social media and then use that freedom to threaten girls who have the right to choose to sing." The CM should have followed his intention in letter and spirit if he was true to what he had pointed out in this tweet. Omar, who claims to be secular and liberal, had let the opportunity slip to take head on hardliners who are toxicing the political environment in Kashmir and had he acted in a tough manner he could have even opened the space for cleansing of toxicity in the Valley which could have gone long way in cornering the separatists. He should have taken cue from PDP senior leader Muzzafar Hussain Beigh who publicly said that he knows many muftis who watch blue films but issue fatwas and have silenced the voice of young girls who were singing in proper dress. The CM sadly lacked the courage though he had entire administration and nothing to loose. |
