Revolt in Abdullah family
NC of differences
2/7/2013 11:19:39 PM

Rustam
Srinagar, Feb 7: National Conference (NC) general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad on Wednesday took on the party critics for no cogent reason and asserted that there were no differences and lack of discipline in the party and that there was no place for controversy in the party. "The NC is not just a strong party but a movement in itself. There is no question of controversies or indiscipline, however, some people with ulterior motives are hell bent upon lobbying against the party," he said. Sheikh Nazir, who is a very close relation of Union Minister Farooq Abdullah and party's very senior most leader and ideologue, also reiterated that the NC is "committed" to achieving "autonomy" and described the NC's alliance with the Congress -- he all along denounces using very strong language against it - as a "compulsion". He also, like Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, brother of Farooq Abdullah and uncle of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, blamed India and Pakistan for all the troubles Kashmir has been facing. He attacked India for not keeping its promises and he took on Pakistan for invading Jammu and Kashmir in 1947.
Did Sheikh Nazir, who hardly moves out of Kashmir, convince anyone by saying there were "no differences" and "no place for controversy" in the party? Did he not become a laughing stock by making an assertion that there is no "lack of discipline in the party? Indeed, there are very serious differences in the party, which has over the period become quite unpopular, with its arch-political rival in Kashmir, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), grabbing its political space and expanding further its constituency in Kashmir day-by-day by exposing what it calls the "misrule of the NC and Abdullahs". Sheikh Nazir only indulged in an exercise of self-deception by saying what he said and gave another opportunity to the PDP to attack it from right and left and paint the Abdullahs in black.
The fact is that the NC is plagued with dissensions of very serious nature. Even the Abdullahs are a divided and pulling each other's legs publicly. Take, for instance, what Mustafa Kamaal a day before Sheikh Nazir made laughable and unconvincing assertions. Talking to Srinagar-based news agency, Kamaal had not only lambasted New Delhi, Congress party, Army, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Pakistan, but had also taken on Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. Accusing the Army and the IB of "repressing" the people of Kashmir and trying to "enslave them completely", Kamaal mocked and ridiculed his elder brother. He said: "For my bold statements against them (Army and IB), I am being loathed by both these agencies while my party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah even advised me to shut my mouth as he fears that these agencies will not let me breathe freely". The meaning of what Kamaal said was crystal clear. Did he not cast aspersions on his elder brother? Undoubtedly, did.
Kamaal not only exposed his brother, who is also president of the NC, but also challenged Omar Abdullah and questioned his November 28, 2012 pre-poll-alliance-with-Congress suggestion. Taking on Omar Abdullah, he said: "The Congress leaders are responsible for the miseries of common people and now they are hitting the target by placing gun on the shoulders of the NC. The Congress can't be our true ally and we are not going to make Congress an ally. Whatever Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been saying (about pre-poll alliance), it might be his personal opinion. Party decisions are not taken by any individual but it is the job of Working Committee".
What Kamaal said should establish that all is not well in the NC, as also all is not well in the Abdullah family.
