| Nothing 'model' in this Model Village | | Villagers rue lack of amenities, MLA's disappearance | | Saahil Suhail Anantnag, Feb 7: Declared in 2006 as Model Village by then the coalition government, Halsidar Shahabad, a village hamlet in South Kashmir Verinag area still sans most basic amenities, exposing the implementation of hyped Model village project. State government especially Rural development Department on Papers is showing Lakhs spent in the village for the development but still the village reflects a picture of an area devoid of all basic facilities from roads to civic amenities. The entire stretch of road, connecting this village with South Kashmir's famous tourist destination Verinag is in shambles with huge potholes, which have crippled life here. "Due to the bad condition of the road people are suffering and despite repeated pleas government seems disinterested in resolving our problems." Shabir Ahmad, Deputy Saprpanch of the village said. Several transporters while lashing out at the administration said that the dilapidated condition of roads has ruined their vehicles and it is becoming tough for them to operate. "See the worsened power networking system in our village, transmission lines on trees and could damage any human being any time." Farooq Ahmad, a resident said. He said that government has installed few solar lights in the village but they have got dysfunctional despite complaints. "Rural department installed few solar lights in the village that was visible change after being declared as Model village but after few months they got dysfunctional and now we are continuously approaching BDO as to repair the lights but he assures and does nothing," he said. Locals said that the village has a single dot centre with one lady attendant and hence is without staff that adds to the sufferings of villages. .Concerned MLA, who also presently heads Tourism Department in the state has passed unfilled assurances to the villagers from last four years and now villagers have left visiting him. "Gulam Ahmad Mir visited our village and assured us that they have made a master plan for the development of the village but from then neither we saw the master and nor the plan.
