| Death in Pak Jail: Chamel's son appeals CM to intervene in retrieving body for last rites | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 11: Distraught family members of Chamel Singh who died in Pak's Kot Lakhpat jail on the other day, today appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdulalh to intervene to bring back the body of his father from Pakistan so that the family could perform his last rites. Earlier they had submitted a memorandum to Divisional Commissioner Jammu in this regard. One of the sons of Indian prisoner Deepak Singh today said that it had been nearly a month since his father had died in mysterious circumstances in Pakistan jail and the family had no official word about it. "The government is yet to contact us formally and inform us about the death of our father inside Pak jail" he said. Chamel Singh was allegedly beaten by the Kot Lakhpat's jail staff including senior officials after they objected over using of a water tap for washing clothes on January 15 following which he was admitted in Jinnaha Hospital, Lahore where he died after a couple of days. The startling revelations were made by none other but by a Pak advocate Tehseem Khan who was also facing sentence in the same jail. Recalling from past, Deepak Singh said "My father had gone missing in 2008 and we had no trace of his whereabouts until we received a letter from him in July, 2012 written from Pakistan." Meanwhile UK based right activist and an advocate Jas Uppal whom Deepak had given express authority to contact both Indian and Pakistani authorities to request an immediate postmortem of his father's body and his repatriation. She has said it was of considerable concern that nearly one month after Singh's body was still in Pakistan, neither the postmortem had been undertaken nor the provisions had made for the release and repatriation of his body to his family in India to attend his cremation. |
