| Massive protests erupt in Valley, death toll reaches three | | Geelani extends shutdown call till Friday | | Mustansir srinagar, Feb 11: The situation in Kashmir valley took an ugly turn today when the body of yet another youth was fished from river Jhelum near Wangipora village in Sumbal who was allegedly drowned in police chase yesterday and was missing since last evening. When the word about the deceased youth identified as Zubair Ahmad being retrieved from river spread, people in hundreds took to the streets shouting anti-establishment slogans. The angry protesters took the body in their possession and marched towards Sumbal hospital for performing autostopy test of the deceased. On way to Sumbal hospital from Batwin village the protesters were confronted by the Tehsildar Sumbal who was trying to pacify the angry mob. However, the protesters reportedly beated Tehsildar and his PSO and took them with to the Hospital where protesters demanded that Tehsildar in his capacity as first class magistrate should direct the police station Sumbal to register FIR against the police and CRPF personnel allegedly involved in the drowning of the two youth the other day. However, Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal directed deployment of heavy contingent of Police and CRPF to disperse the protesters. The forces immediately swung into action and after a brief battle dispersed the angry mob and enforced curfew in the area. The situation according to reports was tense but under control when this report was filed. However, the body of the deceased Zubair was still in the hospital. SP, Bandipora, Bashir Ahmad Khan while downplaying the incident told Early Times that it was a minor incident and that there was no reason to panic. Meanwhile, the uneasy calm that was prevailing in the Valley was broken today as protestors defy curfew in several parts of the Valley. Fresh protests were reported from the Sumbal town of North Kashmir's Baramulla district when the body of the second youth who was allegedly forced to drown by the police last evening. |
