Hundreds of people from Nowgam Verinag and adjacent villages today marched towards Verinag main chowk and held strong protest demonstrations. They tried to burn 'effigy' of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, police foiled their attempt and resulted clashes with deployed security forces, eye witness told this reporter, adding two persons were detained by the police during clashes.
They said that police raided various houses and arrested dozens of young boys who allegedly took part in the stone pelting. Some miscreants here in Watrasoo Achabal attacked Panchayat Ghar during the intervening night and got parsley damaged in the fire incident.
Twin district of southern Kashmir witnessed minor clashes during the day, however in the late evening clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in Lal Chowk, Laizbal, Chee, Malaknag and nearby areas. Few teargas shells were used to disperse the mob.
