PDP 'divided' on contender from Jammu, nod to Nayeem from Valley
LC polls: Congress tightlipped, 2 names decided for NC
2/12/2013 12:48:17 AM
ET Report
Jammu, Feb 11: With issuance of formal notification for polls on 8 seats of Legislative Council, the ball has been set rolling for political parties to decide on the candidates for each seat, though contest or polling looks unlikely as per the electoral college arrangement and the number of votes required for victory on each seat. While ruling allies Congress and National Conference are tightlipped both on their strategy for the polls as also for their candidates , PDP has almost finalized the names for two seats one each from Kashmir and Jammu province, on which its victory is certain. Coalition partners would finalize the things in the coordination committee to be convened anytime soon, before February 18 which is the last date of filing nomination papers for the polls scheduled on March 7.
"We have to discuss the matter first with high command …..things would be taken up with appropriate quarters soon ….it may be required to discuss the strategy in the coordination committee meeting but we have not yet finalized any date for the meeting", said Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, president J&K Pradesh Congress Committee and chairman of the Coordination Committee. While Congress is undecided over the names, NC is believed to have finalized things on at least two seats one each from both the provinces. Sources said while repeating Devender Singh Rana for the second term is almost a foregone conclusion , this may be so in case of NC's another stalwart and sitting MLC MY Taing whose term is also expiring in March. Sources said from Kashmir valley NC has decided to put up Showkat Ganai, a senior leader and functionary from Wachi, who has remained member of the House earlier for 2 years.
As for PDP, while the name of party's chief spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar is almost final, the leadership is undecided for Jammu seat, sources said adding that the Patron of the party Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and second line leadership including the party president Mehbooba Mufti are not on same page for a candidate from Poonch district. While Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is said to be strongly advocating for his name, sources said it is not agreeable to others in the party for more than one reason. One reason that is being attributed for his unacceptability in party is that he has not remained consistent with the party politics nor actively associated with the affairs of the party. However, it remains to be seen whether Mufti Mohammad Sayeed sticks to his decision of accommodating the leader from Poonch , believed to be his long time associate and friend or the writ of the second line leadership prevails over the issue.
As for the arrangement of three separate ballots , all the members of Legislative Assembly would have to cast their votes on three separate ballots, in case the elections are held. However, sources said it looks unlikely that requirement of polls would be there as the number of votes required per seats for the polls suggests uncontested victory for almost all the seats.
