| `Omar should have pulled out after Guru hanging' | | Playing champion of Kashmiri sentiment? | | ET Report Jammu, Feb 11: The Chief Minister in an attempt to save his chair by sounding sympathetic to hanged Afzal Guru has triggered another controversy. The BJP has criticized his interview to a private news channel in which he questioned the wisdom of judiciary. He even called upon executive and judiciary to prove that the hanging was not selective. Chief Minister knew the hanging was about to come. He had though expressed his reservations but for playing a champion of 'Kashmiri' sentiment, he should have categorically stated to the UPA that he would pull out of the Government if it happened. It could have sent the message that Omar was really serious and sincere to the cause. He did slam Sayed Geelani for shedding crocodile tears but it appears that there is not much difference between the two. Omar had enjoyed the perks and privileges as a Union Minister in the NDA Government when Gujarat was burning. He did not tender his resignation. His father Dr Farooq Abdullah who is now a Union Minister has said that hanging was done as per the law. Two years ago he had stated that the hanging will set Kashmir on fire. But today when Guru has been hanged, Farooq has not walked out. The Supreme Court had said that hanging Afzal Guru would satisfy the collective conscience of the people. Omar had put a question mark on it. Attack on Parliament was an attack on the concept of democracy. Had the terrorists succeeded the entire political leadership- cutting across political parties-would have been wiped out. It would have put the democratic structure into jeopardy. The spin by Omar Abdullah equating it with the killing of Beant Singh or former Prime Minster Rajiv Gandhi doesn't find sufficient case. An individual can be replaced but not the entire political leadership. This is the point the Supreme Court had made but Omar Abdullah had tried to make it a regional and religious issue. The Chief Minister-who has projected himself has a forthright leader- is trying to be champion of the sentiments of Kashmiri but is adopting double standards and also questioning the fairness of the legal structure which could prove more damming to him than to his fellow travelers in politics. |
