Jammu, Feb 25: A premier institution of higher learning that it is considered to be, University of Jammu made post graduate students of the Department of Physical Education work like waiters and waitresses, to serve the elite gathering of guests that reached university stadium to witness the final match of the All India Inter University Korfball championship hosted by JU.
While the Department of Physical Education spent huge amount in hosting the championship, it used students pursuing Bachelor and Master degrees in Physical Education, to serve refreshments to guests, which included the Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor besides officers and teachers of the University.
"This is not the first time that we have been asked to work as waiters," said a student pleading anonymity. "Whenever there is a function in the department, our teachers depute us for menial jobs which we cannot refuse as they become vindictive and penalize us in internal assessments," she added. "No other department in the university ever ill treats its students like this. Why can't they hire waiters when they are spending so much," said other students expressing anguish. |
