Silence of Congress means support to secessionism
NC's clamour for Azadi
2/26/2013 12:07:05 AM
Neha
Jammu, Feb 25: It was on February 22 that two senior NC leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's uncle and party additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal and NC Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Rattanpuri, administered a threat to India that New Delhi will have to quit in case it failed to grant autonomy - semi-independence - to the State. Administering the threat, Kamaal had said: "If the Centre will not grant autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, mark my words, in future it will be compelled to grant freedom to the State".
"Time has changed now. The Government of India can no longer throw our autonomy resolution into dustbin. Our party is striving hard to get autonomy for the State as it is the genuine document of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which has the legal authenticity," he had also said. Note and underline the words "our party is striving hard to get autonomy" and see for yourself the direction the NC has been heading towards. He did not say this only. His statement was a clinching proof that he and others in the party, including the Chief Minister and Union Minister and NC president Farooq Abdullah, are working as per a dangerous strategy the party has evolved to create more troubles in the Valley misusing their official positions in the State and at the Centre.
That Kamaal did not make off-the-cuff remarks and that what he said was the party view could also be seen from what Rattanpuri said in his letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The letter was personally handed over to the Prime Minister by Rattanpuri in the Parliament. His outrageous letter, inter-alia, said: "The fact can't be ignored that 'given a chance, Kashmiris will opt for Azadi (Freedom)'. A minority believes that our future may be safer in a secular democratic India. This minority strives to motivate the rest of the compatriots to join them in securing our Azadi within the framework of the Constitution of India".
Rattanpuri not only committed an act of treason, but he also handed over the letter to the Prime Minister with placards in his hands carrying such slogans as "remains of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru should be returned to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for proper burial". He insulted and abused the people of Jammu by displaying such obnoxious slogan, which sought to create an impression that the people of Jammu province and the Kashmiri leadership were one as far as their demand for the return of the remains of the criminals, terrorists and traitors was concerned.
Did the Congress take cognizance of the acts of sedition committed by Kamaal and Rattanpuri? No, not all. The Congress during the past three days did not utter a word against them (NC). It would be foolish to say that the Congress leadership was not aware of what Kamaal and Rattanpuri had said. It was fully aware of the anti-India tirade the NC leaders had launched. It willfully overlooked the NC crimes and, instead, discussed with the Chief Minister the strategy that could help the coalition win maximum number of Legislative Council seats. The meeting took place yesterday. Elections to five seats would be held on March 7, as the remaining three seats already stand filled, one each by the NC, the Congress and the PDP. They won the election unopposed.
That the Congress has not till date reacted to the statements made by Kamaal and Rattanpuri does suggest that both the Congress and the NC are on the same page as far as their stand on Jammu and Kashmir is concerned. What has been more disturbing is the eerie silence of those in the Congress who some two years ago had demanded the trifurcation of the State in a public meeting at Bani and in the presence of the JKPCC president Saif-ud-Din Soz, who happens to be former ideologue of the NC and who also edited a book on autonomy. Soz is an ardent champion of autonomy.
