Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 25: Imagine policing by walking! While crime graph is on rise with increasing cases of thefts, burglaries, hit and run etc. occurring almost every day, the Police Head Quarter (PHQ) of Jammu and Kashmir Police has no funds available for purchasing vehicles for police personnel deputed in the field. For the past over one and half month, an Inspector rank police officer deputed as Station House Officer (SHO) at one of the police stations here in the winter capital is monitoring his jurisdiction on foot. Reasons: the police gypsy vehicle that was kept under his disposal has been declared as not fit for plying. And the new vehicle has not yet been sanctioned for the reasons best known to the senior police officer concerned. While concerned police personnel deputed in that police station are tight-lipped over the issue as their utterances will invite "punishment" from the senior hierarchy, reliable sources in the Police Department confirmed the non-availability of the vehicle to one of the SHOs posted in district Jammu. "Many a times, when his (police officer) private car is kept back at home for use of family members, he hires Auto-Rickshaw to reach and return home," quipped sources in Police Department and further added that "how can one expect proper policing when there is such a long delay in providing an official vehicle to curb crime related incidents." Will the senior police officers at PHQ be able to understand the prevailing situation at grass root level of their department? |
