Hundreds of vehicles leave for Jammu

Srinagar, Feb 25: Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and empty trucks, stranded at different places for the past four days, left for Jammu this morning as the Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained through for only one-way traffic till further orders. However, the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country besides road to far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), remained closed due to snowfall since December last year. A traffic police spokesperson said here today down convoy was allowed on the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. Hundreds of vehicles, including empty trucks and those carrying passengers, left different parts of the Kashmir valley, including Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir, for Jammu.He said no vehicle was allowed from Jammu today, he said adding the vehicles, including those carrying essentials which left Jammu yesterday morning reached Kashmir valley last nigh after the highway was put through for one-way yesterday after remaining closed for two days due to snowfall and landslides.
The Mughal road besides roads connecting far flung villages with their respective district and tehsil headquarters in south Kashmir districts of Kulgam and Shopian remained closed due to heavy snowfall.
Roads connecting the far flung and remote areas, including the villages near the LoC also remained closed since December last year.
The border towns of Keran, Karnah, Tanghdar, Machil, Dawar and Neeru also remained closed since December last year. The highway connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state also remained closed since December last year due to heavy snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojila and Meenmarg.
