| NC ruling State through barrel of gun: Mehbooba | | | Bashir Assad Jammu, March 6: Asserting that the National Conference may be benefited by the situation that has arisen after the hanging of Afzal Guru and the subsequent killing of a Baramulla youth by security forces, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti today said the space for the mainstream political parties was squeezing in the State. While participating in the discussion on adjournment motion brought in the House by her party legislators, Mehbooba said the response of the Government to the situation arisen after the killing of Baramulla youth by the army was casual and that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was least bothered about the situation that has taken an ugly turn in Kashmir. She said that if the Chief Minister of a State expresses his helplessness on the floor of the House, it means he has lost credibility and also the moral authority to rule. While launching a scathing attack on NC leadership, Mehbooba said the party was ruling the State through the barrel of gun. Expressing shock over the killing of an innocent youth in the army firing in Baramulla the other day, the PDP leader said, "had the guilty police and security personnel involved in killing of 120 people in 2010 unrest been brought to book the situation would have been different and the security personnel would not have dared to kill a person without any provocation". Mehbooba said that by punishing the erring security personnel a message would have gone to the men in uniform to observe restraint while dealing with the situation. The leader of opposition said that Omar allowed the hanging of Guru even when he knew about the fall out. Regretting that during NC rule, only miseries were being inflicted upon the people of the State. "They fully knew about the fall out when they signed the death warrant of Maqbool Bhat in 1984 but even then they signed it to earn the blessings of New-Delhi for remaining in power. Similarly they were knowing about the dangerous consequences of Guru's hanging but the Chief Minister allowed it because he is least bothered about the killing of innocent youth." Mehbooba said and posed a question to the Chief Minister as to whether he would have allowed the hanging if he would know that the young boy who will be killed could be his own son. On AFSPA, Mehbooba said the Chief Minister used the AFSPA issue to divert the attention from grave and serious issues. "Whether it was the 2010 killings or the custodial death of Haji Yousuf, Omar Abdullah used AFSPA for diversion of attention from these grave issues and that he was never serious in revocation of the controversial law giving the army unbridled powers. She said that CM was lacking conviction and will to revoke the AFSPA." If you have conviction, then you should have followed it by action which you never did," said Mehbooba. "Whenever an innocent is killed you promise quick action and punishment to the guilty which never happened. You are on record to have said in Anantnag Dak Bunglow when 2 youth were killed by the police that the guilty will be brought to book within 24 hours, did it ever happened" said Mehbooba adding that if CM have had ever stood by his words, a message would have gone to the Army that if he (CM) can punish his people (policemen), he can even deal with them (Army) as well. This, added Mehbooba, would have changed the situation. "Now you say that you are helpless where will we go? She questioned. Accusing CM of labeling those innocent minors who were killed in 2010 in the court as drug addicts and LeT militants, Mehbooba said that he was hiding behind the veil of AFSPA. "You killed 120 people in 2010 and now you believe that the slab will be restricted to 10 or 12 killings by imposing curfew, by snapping internet and SMS services, by gagging media and news channels," Mehbooba told CM. "Hundreds of youth are jailed just because you believe that if they come out they might pelt stones," said Mehbooba adding that Chief Minister has converted Kashmir into a jail. Mehbooba said the Chief Minister has lost credibility by saying that he was helpless. |
