srinagar, March 6: Normal life was affected in Kashmir for the third consecutive day today, due to curfew imposed in several parts of the Valley as a precautionary measure with the authorities apprehending law and order problem following the killing of a youth in Army firing in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Curfew was clamped Tuesday in 10 police station areas of Kashmir valley which include Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Saraf Kadal, Maharajganj, Zadibal, Maisuma and Kral Khaud areas of the old city, a police spokesperson said.
He said curfew has also been imposed in Baramulla and Sopore. The decision to impose curfew was taken at a high level meeting of police officers following the death of Tahir Sofi in an Army firing in Baramulla district on Tuesday afternoon.
Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in large numbers at invulnerable areas of the city and other parts of the Valley to maintain law and order, the police spokesman said.
Although there was no call for shutdown by the separatist groups, a spontaneous shutdown was observed in areas where curfew has not been imposed. Shops and business establishments remained closed while public transport remained off the roads. At least eight persons were injured in the late evening clashes between protestors and security forces in the city and other parts of the Valley, official sources said.
Meanwhile, there were reports from several areas of the old city Srinagar that CRPF men barged into the houses and ransacked them. Residents of Nowhatta in old city today alleged that police and paramilitary CRPF men ransacked our houses and beat up the inmates without any provocation. If police excesses don't stop we would be forced to defy the curfew and take to streets. Meanwhile, Police have registered an FIR against Col Dalbinder Singh of the 46 Rashtriya Rifles for killing a 25-year old youth, Tahir Ahmad Sofi in north Kashmir's Baramulla town.
