| AFSPA revocation: Shinde exposes Omar in Parliament | | | ET Plus Report srinagar, March 6: The truth behind the rhetoric of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over AFSPA revocation was exposed today by the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde after he informed the Parliament that none of the States including Jammu and Kashmir have made any formal request to the Central Government about the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Shinde was replying to the question raised by National Conference Parliamentarian and senior leader, GN Rattanpuri. The statement issued by the Parliamentarian said, "The member wanted to know the names of the States that have made formal requests for the revocation of AFSPA or amendments to the act. The reply was nil." It is pertinent to mention here that State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah threw the debate on AFSPA in 2011 when he claimed that the law will be lifted from some areas within days. "I will continue to pursue the mission of withdrawal of the AFSPA even if Army has publically expressed its reservation for lifting the law. I will still stress for the phased withdrawal of the law from some parts of the State," Omar had told reporters on the sidelines of a function recently. Despite Omar's tall claims about getting the act revoked from the State in a phased manner from last two years he has not been able to withdraw the same even from those areas where the militancy is on decline as claimed by the State Government as well as security agencies. Omar even set deadlines for the start of the partial revocation of the act. Even many National Conference leaders have been all praise for him for what they called his stand with regard to the AFSPA revocation. Omar's beating of AFSPA drum evoked him a severe criticism from the main opposition democratic party who allege that his claims are just apolitical gimmick to divert the attention of the masses from his failure on governance and other fronts. |
