Sher-e-Punjab makes it a big win against Vijay Club

JAMMU, Mar 6: The visiting side of Sher-e-Punjab stunned one the top state teams, Vijay Club, beating latter by seven goals to nil thereby qualified for the quarterfinals stages of the 3rd Rajiv Gandhi Gold Cup Football Tournament underway at GGMScienceCollege ground, here.
Rakesh Kumar emerged as the star striker with four goals to his credit, including hat trick struck in the second half of the play. Rakesh's goals came in 9th, 47th, 54th and 57th minutes. Dilvar Singh (7th and 25th) and Varinder Singh (59th) were other goal scorers.
Leading by three goals in the first half of the play, the well-equipped side of Sher-e-Punjab virtually pushed Vijay Club to the goal area sparing little chance of initiating move.
Except for one single sure goal chance missed by Vijay Club in 40th minute, when ball hit the goal post, there was hardly any calculated move from Vijay Club in the second half of the play.
On the other hand, the flawless game played by the young visiting side of Sher-e-Punjab received applause from the crowd, who admired latter's strength and technique.
Now, Sher-e-Punjab shall take on Jammu and Kashmir Police in the quarterfinals at 1 pm tomorrow. J&K Police XI got direct entry into the quarterfinals because of their last year's standing.
Meanwhile, in another pre-quarterfinal match of the day, Power Development Corporation (PDC)-B also blanked their opponent in Churchill Brothers (5-0) making it a one-sided affair. Now, PDC shall be playing against J&K Bank in the quarterfinals, scheduled for tomorrow at 3 pm.
Earlier, Churchill Brothers held their opponent to a goalless draw. But they could not stop the professional side after the breather. Amanjot Singh (40th), Rahul Kumar (47th), Davian (55th), Sahil Dar (63rd) and Abid (69th) scored for winners PDC-B. Amanjot also shown a yellow card for his foul play in the 45th minute.
Today's matches were officiated by the penal of referees including Koushal Kumar, Suresh Gupta, Hilal Ahmed, Rohit Kumar Gupta, Vijay Kumar, Sohan Kumar and Gagan Kumar.
