| Strawberry fruit show on April 10 | | | et plus report jammu, Apr 8: With an aim to create awareness among fruits growers of Jammu division for cultivation of cash crops, the Horticulture Department is organizing a divisional level fruit show of strawberry, ber and loquat on April 10 in Jammu. The strawberry growers of Jammu division have been requested to participate in the show alongwith their samples and also get their samples registered with the committee before 10 am on April 10 at Reen Palace Chatha road. The strawberry cultivation in Jammu division is picking up with great enthusiasm among the fruit growers especially in Jammu, Kathua, Samba and other districts. This is a short duration cash crop and comes into bearing within 3-4 months after planting of its runners of various cultivars. The growers can fetch a good return within a short time as the Horticulture Department is providing an incentive of cash assistance of Rs.3750 for one kanal are under Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan states scheme in cost intensive component and even small and marginal farmers can avail the incentive under the scheme. During 2012-13, an area of 7.60 hectares at 3000 runners per kanal was covered under this crop in Jammu division involving 142 farmers. The cost benefit ratio is 1:3 at the farmers' field. The department facilitates the farmers to raise this crop under shade house (protected cultivation). The C-grade fruit can be processed into value added products that is jam, RTS and fruit crush to save it from wastage as it is highly perishable crop.
