| Omar promises surplus power, Jammu doesn't get even its share | | Humidity making life miserable | | Mishu Gupta JAMMU, July 29: Life has virtually come to a grinding halt in and around Jammu city with young and old both preferring to stay inside due to high humidity and extremely erratic power supply. This is the situation despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's repeated pledges of making Jammu and Kashmir a power surplus state. What to talk of making J&K power surplus, PDD has failed to maintain supply across the city within the available scenario. Frequent power cuts especially during nights are a serious cause of concern. Traders too are suffering losses due to high fluctuation in electricity. Here one is reminded of what Omar Abdullah said when he took over reigns of power in Jammu and Kashmir. Equating self-reliance in power production with financial autonomy, Omar had then said that state's future lies in optimum use of water resources for power generation. He had further said "My target is to make Jammu and Kashmir a power surplus state and strengthen its economy to such a level from where it need not plead for Central assistance time and again for every development work." However, reality is in complete contrast to the statements and affirmations of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. People have begun saying in Jammu that things have gone from bad to worse in the past two weeks. They maintain that power cuts amid hot and humid conditions have virtually made the life of city residents a living hell. Jammuites, who have been bearing extremely humid weather conditions since the last more than 15 days have been left at the mercy of god almighty by the ruling dispensation. People living in the old city maintain that power cuts are enforced between 10 pm to 5 am causing serious health problems among children and old folk. They maintain that they have never seen such situation during the last 30 years as far as power curtailments are concerned. Residents blame Power Development Department (PDD) for being insensitive towards their problems. Gauri Devi, a lecturer by profession maintained that women are the most affected as they are unable to take proper sleep in the night. "We wake up early in the morning to get our children ready for school and also do other household chores. Repeated power failure is badly affecting our sleeping habit," Gauri added. Early this year, the Chief Minister had ordered to disconnect power supply to his residence and other VIP areas from the essential service feeder and directed the PDD not to make any preference in supplying electricity to VIP areas. However, people maintain that Omar's approach has remained discriminatory towards Jammu despite the fact that people are suffering badly. |
