Crime against women in J&K soaring alarmingly
7/29/2013 11:14:02 PM

JAMMU, July 29: Despite stringent laws devised of late to empower women, crime graph against women in the state is soaring alarmingly.
Going by the statistics of the Police department, 2012 has been worst in terms of women's safety with steep rise in cases of abduction and outraging of modesty, officials said.
During the year 2012, 303 rape cases, 1322 cases of molestation, 347 cases of eve teasing , 286 cases of cruelty by husbands and 8 cases of dowry deaths were registered in the state , in which Jammu topped with registrations of 39 rape cases, followed by Rajouri 32, Udhampur 30 and Kathua 20.
Where as in Kashmir zone, Srinagar topped the list with registration of 19 rape cases, followed by Baramulla 12, Kupwara 15, Handwara and Bandipur 6 each.
Jammu reported 5 Dowry deaths while Rajouri, Kathua and Samba registered 1 each; whereas in Kashmir, no dowry death case has been registered. Under head cruelty by husbands (498A) Jammu again topped the list with registrations of 67 cases followed by Srinagar where 63 cases were registered. Doda registered 26 cases, Baramulla registered 13 cases and 11 cases were registered in Kishtwar.
Similarly under molestation head, Srinagar topped the list with registrations of 201 cases followed by Anantnag where 130 cases were registered. Besides 114 cases were registered in Budgam, 109 cases were registered in Baramulla , While Rajouri and Jammu accounted for 51 and 44 cases respectively.
Above data suggests that there is steep rise in crime cases against women in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2012 as compared to the year 2011. It further indicates that nothing much was done by the zonal, range and districts heads to bring down crime against women. According to an insider, IGPs, Range, DIGs and district heads hardly conduct crime meetings thereby an important aspect of crime supervision remains neglected
