| Power woes spell doom for Channi Himmat residents | | Area without electricity for five days | | Bijay Charak
Jammu, Aug 5: After staying without power in scorching heat and humidity for five days, residents of Channi Himmat sector number 3 had taken a sigh of relief on Sunday evening after damaged transformer was replaced, but the relief was short lived as newly installed transformer developed a technical snag within hours after replacement, snapping power supply for hours on sixth straight day. Even the power supply has been restored but unscheduled curtailment is still continue with power supply playing hide and seek, increasing the woes of already distressed residents. Narrating their grievances caused due to power failure, miffed residents informed Early Time that they had gotten a sigh of relief on Sunday evening when transformer was replaced. "The relief we got was very short lived and at around 11:30 PM the power again went off. Initially we thought that it was curtailment for few minutes but within half an hour all residents came on roads and started enquiring about the problem", Abijit Suri said. He further said that around five hundred people assembled there and marched towards grid station. "We got astonished to find that the night watchman at Grid station was in inebriated condition. We started protest and asked watchman to snapped power supply of entire Channi Himmat", he recalled. The residents further said that within an hour police arrived at the scene along with lineman. "The lineman assured to provide power supply in entire locality in a phase manner to all localities, following which we returned. Entire night the power played hide and seek and in the morning the technical snag developed in the transformer was fixed", they said. Castigating the Power Development Department (PDD) Dr. VS Charak rued that due to extreme humid weather they had to face extreme difficulties in last six days. "We had no cool water in our households. Even we had no water to bath and washing clothes", he said, adding that the electricity supply cables were old, got broke down due to minor flashing. Romit Sahni, who runs a dancing institute in Channi Himat said that for the last six days, he didn't attend his tuition classes. "I had been coming to institute daily but children were not able to do practice, so I had to return. The power curtailment has spoiled my business for six days", he said, adding that the unscheduled curtailment was continuing which was creating lot of hurdles. |
