| MSc Horticulture aspirants from SKUAST-J/K may miss opportunity | | 22 posts of Horticulture Development Officers | | Akshay Azad JAMMU, Aug 5: The students who have qualified M.Sc in Horticulture from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology Jammu/Kashmir may not be considered for selection as Horticulture Development Officer (HDO) as their M.Sc degree technically holds no relevance due to nomenclature of degrees, required for HDO post. Interestingly the M.Sc course is at par with all other universities across the country but there is a difference in nomenclature of degrees, which has become a great hurdle for aspiring students qualified from SKUAST-J/K to be considered equal in qualification to students passed out from Allahabad Agriculture University. Sources informed Early Times that JKPSC had recently advertised 22 posts of Horticulture Development Officers (HDO) and has sought qualification M.Sc Horticulture and in case of non-availability B.Sc Horticulture/B.Sc Agriculture. Explaining their concern and reasons of despondency, a M.Sc qualified candidate Ghulam Hassan said that nomenclature of degrees given by SKUAST-J/K, is M.Sc Agriculture (Pomology /Olericulture /Floriculture and Landscapping/Post Harvest Technology). "The nomenclature given by Punjab Agriculture University to their degrees is M.Sc (Pomology/ Olericulture /Floriculture and Landscapping/Post Harvest Technology)", he said, adding that all said three Universities were not writing 'M.Sc Horticulture' on degrees which has become bone of contention. He further said that on the M.Sc degrees secured by candidates from Allahabad Agriculture University, it has been mentioned as M.Sc Horticulture (Pomology/Vegetable Sciences beside others). "Due to such nomenclature the students of AAU are preferred and in the past JKPSC had advertised 78 posts of HDOs and when the recruitment process had completed majority of selected candidates were from AAU", another candidates said. He further said that even when the selections were made, eligible candidates from SKUAST-J/K had raised objections and Government had constituted a committee but nothing has been done to break the logjam. "It is very surprising that the JKPSC had not taken care of the interest of students qualified degrees from state universities and has once again advertised posts, demanding qualification M.Sc horticulture as sought in past. Already students not prefer to take admission in SKAUST-J/K due to scarcity of job opportunities and when some vacancies are advertised, SKUAST students are suffering", he said. A professor of SKUAST-J seeking anonymity said that from the attitude of Government, it seemed that both state Universities were heading towards their closure as none bothered about the future of thousands of students passed every year from these universities. Eligible candidates appealed Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir to instruct JKPSC to adopt the recommendation of committee, so that students of state universities would also get themselves adjusted as HDOs. Additional Secretary to Agriculture department, Dr. MK Kumar said that they had already clarified the JKPSC authorities but the final decision has to be taken by them. |
