CM Omar Abdullah vis-à-vis statehood demand in Jammu
Jammu-based NC leader's opposition flawed

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 10: One Jammu-based NC leader has unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign against those demanding status of statehood for Jammu Pradesh saying the people of the region, who are fed up with the discriminatory policies and are against the Kashmiri leadership's separatist demands, no longer prepared to accept the position of subordination and servitude and that they want to shape and control their socio-economic and political destiny within India and under Indian Constitution. He has been dubbing the votaries of separate Jammu State as "anti-national", communal and divisive.
It appears the NC leader has not gone through what Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on July 30 in this regard during his interaction with reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar. It was on July 30 that the UPA decided to create a separate Telangana State out of Andhra Pradesh.
Had this NC leader gone through the Chief Minister's statement, he would not started campaign against the votaries of separate Jammu State.
Omar Abdullah had, among other things, said: "Telangana is being created on the basis of an agitation. It is not being created on the basis of any recommendation of a state reorganisation commission or something like that. I believe that this is a dangerous trend…An impression is being created that an agitation can lead to the creation of a new state, be it Bundelkhand, Gorkhaland or our state…The message being sent to the people was that their demand for statehood would be accepted if they 'agitate enough and agitate long enough'…The 'sort of precedent' being set of creating new states on the basis of an agitation could have an impact in other parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, where several groups had been demanding statehood for the Jammu region and union territory status for the Ladakh region…It should not be piecemeal. 'What is happening is that you are giving incentives to agitations".
The CM had also asked: "Will you (New Delhi) tell the people of Jammu that you agitate for eight or 10 years and you will get a separate state?" Of course, he had said he was not for bifurcation of the states, asserting that he believed that "remaining as one is very important for states like Jammu and Kashmir, even with their diversity", but, at the same time, had suggested that the task of creating new states should be given to a reorganisation commission. "If there is a need to create new states, a states reorganisation commission should be set up and it should be given this task," he had said. He did not say that those demanding separate JammuState were anti-national. In fact, he recognised the fact that the people of Jammuwanted separate Jammu State.
It was not for nothing that the Jammu State Morcha president, Virender Gupta hailed CM Omar Abdullah. Hailing the CM, he had appreciated, and very rightly, himfor "officially admitting that there was the demand for a separate state for theJammu region" and supported Omar Abdullah's suggestion to "entrust the job of creating a separate state to a states reorganisation commission".
It would be better if the NC leader studies the CM's July 30 statement and stops terming the votaries of separate Jammu State as "anti-national".
