| Congress defers its Provincial convention, undecided on new date | | Kishtwar situation fallout: | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: Even as the NC led coalition government has ordered probe into circumstances that led to tension and prevalent situation in the Kishtwar township, Congress , the major ally of government is perturbed and worried for more than one reason, given the fact that political sensitivities are at stake more than any other party in the most sensitive area of the Jammu province. As a first unpleasant fallout, the prevailing situation has forced the party to defer its provincial level party convention which was scheduled for tomorrow. The new date has not been decided by the party leadership due to unconfirmed status of engagements of senior leaders from New Delhi.
Sources said the Congress had made all preparations for the Convention, the first in run up to the elaborate schedule of programmes and rallies across the state ahead of elections next year , the thrust being on Jammu province for apparent reasons. While the district and block level functionaries had mobilized the cadres of the party to ensure a huge and impressive strength of supporters and general public and things had been given final shape to make the political event a grand success in turning it a show of unity as well as the political strength , it was perhaps for the first time that stalwarts from New Delhi Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as well as the incharge of J&K Ambika Soni had given their consent on assuring note, implying their presence was certain much to the delight of the cadres of the party whose morale has been sagging for quite some time for various reasons.
Sources said the deferment of the Convention on Sunday has perturbed the cadres and some senior leaders including the PCC leadership as gala preparations were in place to make it an impressive political event. While things are under control in Kishtwar and the government including the district administration , no matter after losing and wasting a considerable time has now taken the grip over situation , the political atmosphere and volatile climate is still tense and therefore continuing with holding of the party convention would not have been seen in good light which is why the party deemed it proper to postpone it.
One of main reasons for deferring the convention was that leaders would not have been able to facilitate movement of people from various places outside Jammu on account of Jammu Bandh that was called by BJP and other organizations today. Pertinent to mention is that apart from PC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz , both Azad and Soni were to attend the convention which among other things would have set the ball rolling for strategy of the party ahead of polls . Sources said the senior leaders and PCC leadership were scheduled to take a review of the party vis-à-vis general political situation across the state . The party leaders had also as crucial agenda on meeting thereafter to discuss the impact on ties between the ruling allies following recent remarks by NC leader Mustafa Kamal and the deep anguish and concern expressed by rank and file of the Congress which they termed Mustafa utterings as having hurt the morale of the cadres deeply. |
