JAMMU, Aug 10: It is now almost established that certain elements had planned an attack on the members of the minority community on August 10 after Eid prayers in Kishtwar. How else should one describe the fact that twelve bore guns, petrol bottles, lathis and all other available material was used immediately by the mob to set on fire shops, commercial establishments and houses belonging to the minority community and set on fire hotels, buses, petrol tankers, trucks and cars and teach the minority community a lesson immediately after the members of the minority community took an exception to the anti-India and anti-minority slogans raised by certain persons.
It was free for all for several hours, as the police and civil administration did nothing to act against the enemies of humanity. In fact, the administration watched the gory incidents as a mute spectator. It was no wonder then that the hooligans caused an extensive damage to property, both public and private, and critically injured over 100 innocent nationalists. Two persons reportedly lost their lives.
As if all this was not enough to create fear psychosis, the authorities did not allow the District Hospital, Kishtwar, Doctors to admit the injured persons so that they could get medical treatment at the earliest. Bulk of the staff of the Hospital, which is located in the majority-community dominated area, consists of members belonging to the majority community.
It must remain a matter of shame that the administration, instead of providing medical aid to the critically injured members of the minority community, created a situation that endangered their life. They were taken to the Army camps. Four persons among them were sent to the Military Hospital, Udhampur, in a highly critical condition.
The authorities have to explain as to why the critical persons were not admitted in the District Hospital. They have also to identify them and bring them to justice to restore the minority community's confidence in the administration. They have also to tell the minority community as to why the police did not take action against the hooligans for hours together and who had directed the police not to act against them - an inaction that resulted in an orgy of death and destruction on an unprecedented scale. It is a must considering the mood of the people of Jammu province as well as across the nation. People do not expect any fair play from the controversial and NC. It is the duty of the Congress to move in, act and force the NC to do the needful at the earliest.
