| 2 motorcycles set ablaze, more than 100 protestors arrested in Jammu | | Curfew to remain in force; Amarnath yatra to resume today | | Sumit Sharma Jammu, Aug 12: Jammu may have to reel under curfew for a little longer as administration decided to wait and watch a little longer before granting any relaxation in the restrictions that have been imposed since last two days. About dozen of protestors received injuries in ding dong battles that took place in different pockets of Jammu city here today. While police arrested about a hundred protestors in Jammu and about 11 in Kishtwar district, Principal Home Secretary Suresh Kumar informed, adding, curfew shall remain in force, and any relaxation shall be reviewed Tuesday if all goes well. The authorities have also decided to resume the Amarnath yatra on Tuesday under army protection. About 150 pilgrims had been stranded at the base camp, Bhagwati Nagar since the curfew was imposed. Suresh Kumar further informed that VDC members would not be disbanded as demanded by certain corners of Kishtwar and Srinagar. "It is a policy matter, as such no decision has been taken to disband VDCs. As per reports, the protest demonstrations continued in the adjoining areas of Jammu on the third consecutive day, despite curfew. Two motorcycles were set on fire by some protestors in village Bhagatpur, under the jurisdiction of Pouni police here today. They also pelted stone on police personnel and in retaliation police resorted to cane charge. In the incident some protestors received injuries. In New Plot area, police had tough time when some miscreants pelted stones. Meanwhile, rumors of relaxation in the curfew costed some city businessmen dearly. As they opened their business units on hearing reports of relaxation curfew they were arrested for defying curfew. Meanwhile, police senior officers including IGP, SSP and DC Jammu rushed to the Janipur area following the complaint of one Ex Municipal Councilor Aslam Shah that some miscreants made bid to burn his house. The situation was accessed of and a case in this connection has been registered by police. The protestors also burnt tyres on road in Miran Sahib and RS Pura to express their resentment over Kishtwar incident. They also shouted anti government slogans. Meanwhile, Army today imposed strict curfew in Jammu. No untoward incident was reported in the city and its outskirts on Monday. The City of temples wore deserted look as people were not allowed to come out of their homes and all roads were blocked by the Army and Police with the barbed wires. Some minor clashes were reported in the outskirts of the city, however, police claimed peace throughout the day. However, minor clashes were reported at Janipur, Sarwal, Purani Mandi and City Chowk. A K Sahu, Deputy commissioner informed, "The situation in Jammu was normal today, strict curfew was imposed in the city, we are reviewing the situation, after that we may think about the relaxation in the curfew." Commissioner Home in a press conference said that the curfew shall continue in all eight district of the Jammu region tomorrow. In Rajouri district there was no relaxation in curfew, F C Bhagat, DC Rajouri said that amid tense situation the administration strictly imposed curfew in the major towns of the district. Meanwhile the normal life returned back in the other parts of Jammu region. DC Doda, Mubarak Singh said that only Bhaderwah town of Doda district is under curfew as precautionary measures while normal life returned in other parts of the district. According to DC Reasi, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, there were no reports of any untoward incidents from any part of the district and administration allowed relaxation of 3 hours in curfew from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm and it may be extended Tuesday morning form 6.00 am. He also added that 26 thousands pilgrims paid their obesiance at holy cave of Vaishno Devi and 870 pilgrims visited Shiv Khori shrine today in the district. In Samba district no untoward incident were reported, the movement on highway was normal amid tight security cover. DC Samba, R K Verma, said, "Keeping in view the normal situation the administration gave relaxation in the curfew of 3 hours, i.e 4.00 pm to 7 .00 pm which may be extended if situation remained under control." In Udhampur the administration gave curfew relaxation form 6.00 pm to 8.00 and no untoward incidents were reported. |
