| Nation alarmed over Kishtwar happenings | | Parliamentarians condemn violence, trade charges | | Jaitley takes on Abdullahs, Sinha slams J&K Govt
Early Times Report
New Delhi, Aug 12: Amid uproar in Parliament over the issue of violence in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar town, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley of the BJP on Monday hit out at the state government. Speaking during a discussion in the Upper House on the matter, Jaitley - who was yesterday stopped at Jammu airport from visiting Kishtwar where communal violence since Friday claimed three lives - said, "Jammu and Kashmir is not the private property of one family. Even media has kept a stunning silence. It requires investigation." Jaitley, who was indirectly referring to the Abdullah family, added that "it was only after 6 to 7 hours that the Army was actually called in; till then there was murder and mayhem in Kishtwar." "You are putting in place a system in J&K like in the 1990s… as if anybody going there only has the intention of causing disturbance," he said further. An angry Farooq Abdullah responded to Jaitley's charges, saying, "In 2002, Gujarat did not allow people to enter Ahmedabad… did not deploy the Army. It is not the property of (Narendra) Modi." Earlier in the day, both the Houses of Parliament faced repeated adjournments amidst noisy protests by the BJP over riot-hit Kishtwar town in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, slamming both the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government for the violence in Kishtwar, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha today said government remained a "mute spectator" to the clashes in which Pakistan's hand is suspected. "This is not communal violence, this is a war between Pakistan and India, whatever is happening there is Pakistan-inspired," he told reporters outside Parliament. He said the violence was perpetrated against the locals, their houses and shops burnt, Pakistan flag was unfurled and pro-Pakistan slogans were raised but the "government remained a mute spectator as the events unfolded. It is trying to hide the truth". Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to order a judicial inquiry into the communal clashes in Kishtwar district that left three persons dead and 20 others injured. The clashes broke out on Eid day and spread to other parts of the Jammu region including Jammu city and Rajouri town. |
