| "Raksha Bandhan" | | | Kundan Kashmiri
This week, comes "Raksha Bandhan", the festival of tying knot of Amity and brotherhood for brothers and sisters. The word "Raksha" means protection and "Bandhan" connotes a bond, so it signifies the bond of protection. The protection in form of dark hand of evil and other perils. This protection not reveals only the physical, but also moral and spiritual aspects of a bond between sister and brother. The spiritual significance of "Raksha Bandhan" is when one takes as sacred vow of purity before God to live a life of purity in thoughts, words and action. Our society believes that relationships are the essence of celebrations. A Rakhi is not merely a thread, but a strong knot between siblings and this festival also brings families together. It is primarily a festival of the north but similar sentiments are celebrated across the country as well. This is festival celebrated as the destroyer of venom, bestower of boons and destroyer of sins in various parts of India. This festival of Rakhi is now more than a sister and brother festival and there have been examples in history were Rakhi donated Raksha or protection and tied by wives, daughters and even by mothers. Priests tied Rakhi to the people who came seeking their blessings, sages tied the sacred thread on themselves to safe guard from evil powers. This Rakhi is not now ritual limited to Hindus, but has become part of Indian Culture, strengthening brotherhood. Philosophically speaking, the festival represents the thread of unity binding humans to other. Going still deeper the strings of the quantum world could be regarded as thread of unity of the universal consciousness. This occasion can now be used to reaffirm moral, cultural and spiritual values and these values and the sentiments attached to this festival are worth inculcating by the human race,---- namely harmony in an atmosphere of peaceful protection. So, this festival should symbolize all forms of protection, righteousness, friendship, well being and uphold destroyers of sin ---- for only such people will truly qualify to be the protectors of their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. This festival should strengthen the bonds of love and affection between brothers and sisters and also bring friends and strangers closer. When Rakhi is tied on the wrists it connects individuals on a new platform and brings them closer. But in recent times humanity appears to have lost its moral and spiritual bearing and society has become impure and disregarded. It has now become necessary to safe-guard our women from the lustful eyes and even some close relations, neighbours and society at large. The sacred filial covenant of love is in real danger as women are exploited and assaulted in our homes and neighbourhood by unscrupulous men. The recent horrifying incidents with women which include Nirbhaya incident in Delhi is an indicator of how women are insecure from men even at times when there are people up and about. It is need to understand that festival of Rakhi brings a deeper meaning and understanding to the celebrations, because it basically is about a women. Each women is somebody's mother, daughter or sister. "Raksha Bandhan" is festival of sacred sisterly-brotherly relationships not for one day but for eternity. So, this year while celebrating "Raksha Bandhan" remember that it also manifests great respect and love that unites two souls in a deep, sacred relationship. Let us hope its true meanings in revived and it again begins to donate an eternal promise of protection, love and respect in the years to come. "I congratulate you all on the great festival of "Raksha Bandhan"." Kundan Kashmiri Socio-Human Right Activist President, KPC Mobile : 08285224519 |
