| PDD holds JU hostage; erratic power supply affects Research work | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 18: The University of Jammu (JU) and Power Development Department are at loggerheads with each other as the former is complaining about the erratic power supply while the latter is insisting on payment of Rs. Nine lakh besides hefty labour and supervision charges for installation of dedicated feeder despite of the fact that University regularly pays hefty power charges in addition to demand charges. Scholars and students of the University are also critical of the frequent power cuts coupled with low voltage supply and fluctuations that are taking heavy toll on their teaching and research work besides day-to-day functioning of the University. Sources disclosed that a meeting was held in the office of Vice Chancellor, wherein PDD officials including Superintending Engineer (SE), Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) and others were present. The VC apprised PDD officials of the problems being faced in view of prevailing low voltage supply, frequent cuts and fluctuations. He mentioned that power supply remains off for more than 12 hours a day. He said research work was suffering badly, besides the hostel boarders were also facing lot of hardships . The PDD official stated that special dedicated 11KV feeder supplying power to JU not working properly and need replacement / repair. The power to JU is been provided through the temporary arrangement by clubbing the same with Feeder RC 6, they added. Further, they submitted an estimate of Rs 9 lakh for establishment of special panel. Besides, the estimate for spare cable 185 mm square amounting Rs 1.36 lakh, labour charges at the rate of 25 percent of the material cost and supervision charges were also included. Immediately after the meeting, the frequency of power cuts increased manifold whereas areas in the vicinity of JU had regular supply through the same feeder. It gave an impression that PDD was adopting blackmailing tactics to push JU for payment of the cost estimated by them. When contacted, Vice Chancellor Dr Mohan Pal Singh Ishar said the matter was taken up with PDD officials and they suggested installation of separate panel costing Rs 9 lakh excluding hefty labour and supervision charges. "We have no objection to cost of panel but the other charges mentioned by PDD officials are not justified hence can't be paid. Now, we have decided to take up the matter with higher ups," he said. On other hand, Superintending Engineer Gurbachan Singh mentioned that feeder that supplies power to University was not working after which alternate arrangement was made. "JU needs dedicated feeder and we have forwarded an estimate of Rs nine lakh towards the cost of panel and other expenses including labour and supervision charges which University is required to pay, he added. |
