| Kashmiri melodies to resonate in UK when Mehta performs at Shalimar | | | Majid Ahmad Srinagar, Aug 30: At a time when separatists and some civil society members in Kashmir have upped ante against holding concert by celebrated conductor Zubin Mehta in Srinagar on September 7, for the first time the Kashmiri singers and traditional musicians will be performing in United Kingdom to popularise the art before a wide-stream of audience. Interestingly, the group of five singers led by Kashmir's renowned singer, Waheed Jeelani, will perform in UK on September 7, same day Mehta show is scheduled to be held in Kashmir. Market players said most of the music loving Kashmiris settled across UK have booked their tickets in advance for Waheed Jeelani concerts. "More than 1500 people from all sections are expected to witness the Music concerts of Kashmiri artists. Waheed Jeelani will be interacting with British and Asian audience through some live programmes on various Television and Radio channels," said a source privy to the event. For the first time the artists playing traditional musical instruments will also be part of the troupe. Kashmir's known Sarangi Nawaz and folk singer Mohommad Abdullah Bhat Shakhsaz, Rabab player Ghulam Mohammad. Lone, Tabla and Tumbaknari player Imtiyaz Malik will be playing Kashmiri orchestra. Usha Khar, a Jammu based Kashmiri female vocalist, is another member of the troupe. His concerts would be a part of cultural tour which includes shows organized by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, ICCR London, Luton Cultural Festival, Kashmir Bhavan Centre and Kashmiri Association of Great Britain London. Jeelani has been sponsored and deputed by the state government to participate and represent the state in various cultural programmes and festivals across UK. The cultural tour is seen as a major boost to promote the Kashmiri music which has been witnessing a decline among the local listeners owing to the popularity of Bollywood songs. Waheed Jeelani said, "Let Zubin Mehta cast his musical magic on Kashmiris and let us do the same on the UK audience." "More than 1500 people are expected to witness our concerts. We will also interact with British and Asian audience through live programmes on various television and radio channels. On September 09, our group will perform on UK's most viewed Television channel-DM Digital TV. The programme will be telecasted live in more than 38 countries across Europe and America," informed Jeelani. Jeelani said that the group would also perform at Scotland in a Charity Music Concert on September 17 which will be organized by Creative Scotland Arts Council. |
