| Court awards 10 yrs RI imprisonment to trans-border smuggler | | | JAMMU, Aug 30: Principal Sessions Judge Jammu today awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 1 lakh to a trans-border smuggler who was facing trial in smuggling of five Kilogram heroin for the last 16 years. Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Kartar Singh after hearing D.N. Pangotra Special PP for customs Department whereas Adv S.D.S.Saini for the accused observed that offence under section 21/23/ NDPS Act stands proved against the accused Gurdev Singh, who caught red handed at BOP Alpha Machaal by the Naka party of BSF and custom officers along with five kgs of contraband. Court awarded rigorous imprisonment to the accused for a period of ten years while asking him to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh. According to case, on specific information about some persons were going to cross IB for smuggling narcotics. Alert police on the intervening night of April 6/7 in 1997, at about 3 / 4 am, police saw some movement on border and they challenged them. Those persons have entered into India territory and those persons having weapon ran away, whereas the accused Gurdev Singh who was hiding near the bushes was apprehended and he was searched in presence of two independent witnesses and 5 kgs Heroin was recovered from his possession.
