Five infiltrators killed by army near LoC in Tangdhar sector
10 militants killed in operations in two days

SRINAGAR, Aug 31: Security forces foiled a major infiltration bid in the Tangdhar area of Kupwara sector near the Line of Control (LoC) by killing five militants over the past two nights. War like stores was recovered from the possession of the slain militants.
This is the second major operation against the militants in two days as five militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed in an encounter with police and army in the Najawan forest range of Preng in Kangan area of Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district during the intervening night of August 29 and 30.
A defence spokesman said that based on specific intelligence about likelihood of infiltration, troops deployed in the Tangdhar Sector of Kupwara district launched a counter infiltration operation during the intervening nights of August 29 & 30 and August 30 & 31.
The spokesman said that the operation during the two nights resulted in killing of five militants who were attempting to come to this side of Line of Control.
"The alert troops who were guarding the Line of Control got intelligence inputs about likelihood of infiltration attempt on the night of August 29. At about 11:30 PM on August 29, the intruders were spotted attempting infiltration. Accordingly, troops established counter infiltration posture to cover the route of infiltration. The militant group was trapped at a location, approximately one and half kilometers on our side of the Line of Control," said the defence spokesman.
The defence spokesman said that grid remained in place for next 24 hours despite difficult terrain and bad weather. He said on the night of August 30, the noose around the militant group was tightened forcing them to attempt breaking out of the cordon, adding that two militants were spotted at approximately 50 meters from the troops.
"On being challenged, the militants opened heavy fire on the soldiers posted near the Line of Control as part of this anti-infiltration operation.
The fire was returned and the gun fight ensued for few hours resulting into the killing of four militants. Later, in the night move of other militant was also detected in the same area," said the defence spokesman. The defence spokesman said that this militant too were effectively engaged and killed in a swift operation. He said during the searches conducted in the area bodies of five slain militants were recovered adding that six AK-47 rifles and other warlike stores were also recovered from the spot of searches. He said the identity and affiliation of the militant group is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, reports said that cordon and search operation is going on in the area as the army is looking for the sixth militant who was also part of the group that tried to sneak to this side from across the border.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt Gen Gurmit Singh has commended the soldiers and commanders for the professionalism and grit resulting into surgical counter infiltration operation eliminating the infiltration bid.
He also conveyed special appreciation to the intelligence agencies for the effective intelligence grid.
It would be in place to mention here that five militants including Qari Asadullah, district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an encounter with police and security forces in the wee hours on August 30 in the Preng-Kangan area of Ganderbal district.
