Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Union Health Minister and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had reportedly said the effective period for fulfilling promises made by the party is only six months before the Assembly elections are held. He had also said Cong can emerge as the single largest party. Azad said it in his address at the one day convention of the party on Saturday, which was also addressed by party in-charge Ambika Soni and state unit president Saif-ud-din Soz. All Congress Ministers and senior leaders attended the meeting. "Effective electioneering period is only six month. So we should work on the lines that elections are due in next six-months," Azad had reportedly told the participants, said a senior Cong leader, who was present there, wishing not to be named. The Assembly elections are due next November. However, with winter setting and code of conduct in place two months before elections, the, the effective period remains only six month. Azad also reportedly said that Congress can emerge as the single largest party and for it party activists have to stop groupism . "PDP can't exceed its tally from present 21 to 51 and other party (read NC) can't move from present 28 to 58 but Cong has the potential to up its tally from 17 to 37," Azad had reportedly said. The party had in the last Assembly suffered most at the hands of the BJP which upped its tally from one seat in 2002 to 11 in 2008 riding on the Amarnath Land row. But now with its seven MLAs expelled from the party, Cong is calculating that BJP will find it hard to regain its political space in the Jammu division. Cong is also banking on upping its tally in Kashmir from present three seats to at-least six seats. "The party workers can be adjusted only if Cong emerges as the largest party and it can be realized but party cadres had to work collectively for it to happen," Azad had said. |
