| Cong-NC breakup looking imminent | | | ET Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Congress leadership is facing intense pressure from party workers to breakup alliance with National Conference to form Government on its own in the next Legislative Assembly elections. During the one day convention of PCC, majority of the party leaders in the presence of All India Congress Committee General Secretary Ambika Soni, who is in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, warned the party leadership against entering into pre-poll alliance with NC. They said that during the last five years NC has been hatching conspiracies to weaken Congress in the State so it was better for the party to break-up the alliance for future. Some leaders drew attention of the party leadership towards statements given by outspoken additional general secretary of NC Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, who has launched vicious campaign against Congress leadership especially PCC chief Saif ud din Soz and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Insiders said that it is all due to the resentment showed by party leaders that Ambika Soni has also dropped some hints to go in alone in the coming Assembly elections. Sources said that Ambika Soni told the Congress leaders present in the meeting that party would contest elections on all the 87 Assembly Segments in the coming elections. She asked state leadership to prepare a list of panel for potential candidates for all the 87 Assembly seats. Insiders said that taking advantage of the resentment shown by Congress workers in the convention, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad also indicated that Congress would go in alone in the Assembly elections. He said that party would form its own Government by contesting the elections without any alliance. Sources said that PCC chief Saif-Ud-Din Soz was already opposing alliance with NC but Congress high-command was not taking his suggestions seriously. After today's convention in which majority of the participants opposed pre-poll alliance with NC, Soz is likely to vociferously take up this issue before the high command again. |
