Local Bodies Employees threaten to march towards CM’s residence in support of demands

SRINAGAR, Aug 31: Employees of Urban Local Bodies today threatened to march towards the residence of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and carry out night protests in support of their demands if those are not met by state government in the near future.
The decision to march towards CM's residence was announced by Joint Consultative Committee leader and President of his faction of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), Abdul Qayoom Wani while addressing the urban local bodies of North Kashmir who had assembled as part of their agitation programme carried out by them in support of their demands.
In the morning hundreds of urban local bodies employees of Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara assembled near the Khalsa High School here as part of the protest programme in support of their demands. The employees of local bodies carried out agitation programme over the past one week while demanding release of their pending salaries and fulfillment of other demands.
Work in the municipal committees and councils of North Kashmir was affected as the Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) had asked the employees to suspend their work. The employees had been told to move towards Srinagar and court arrest near the Civil Secretariat.
Before marching towards the Civil Secretariat the employees were arrested by EJAC-Q President who said that EJAC would chalk out the future agitation programme of the urban local bodies' employees.
Qayoom asked the CM, finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather and urban development minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora to concede demands of employees or be ready to face more comprehensive agitation.
The huge posse of police near the Jehangir Chowk failed to stop the advancing employees towards the civil secretariat. The lobbing of water cannons on the employees failed to dampen their spirit and they managed to reach near the civil secretariat. More than 200 employees courted arrest on this occasion and they were lodged at Shaheed Gunj, Batmaloo and Shergarhi police stations. Meanwhile, Chairman ULBEUF, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori told Early Times that the employees of urban local bodies would assemble at the Directorate at Bemina on Monday September 2 and carry out day and night protests in support of their demands. Manzoor threatened of more vigorous agitation in case the demands of employees are not met soon.
