| Has support of 14 councillors, confident to get 15 | | Congress stakes claim for LAHDC Kargil | | ET Report JAMMU, Sept 2: The All India Congress Party (AICC) today staked claim for forming Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil and Asgar Karbalai is set to become the chief executive councillor. On Monday morning, Congress party formally submitted its claim of forming the council with the deputy commissioner Kargil Fida Hussain, who will now forward it to the state Government. "We have given the list of councillors and have staked claim for forming new council. We at present have support of 14 councillors but are hopeful that we will reach to the mark of 15," said a senior Congress leader. The oath taking ceremony is expected to be held on September 6, for which the district session judge of Kargil will be administering oath to the councillors and CEC. The Congress party had won 10 seats in LAHDC Kargil unit's election held on August 22. The ruling National Conference had only won eight seats and its alliance partner Islamia School had won three seats. Five independents had also won elections which made them trump card. The NC was trying to woo these independent councillors but Congress managed to get them on its side and now on Monday staked claim for the forming the council. The Congress is in coalition with National Conference in state Government but had contested LAHDC Kargil elections against each other. After the results were out, Congress party got a strong boost and now feels that the party can win Assembly elections as well. "The Ladakh victory is great landmark for Congress party and now we are eyeing on Kashmir valley. PDP is also worried about our achievement and that is why Mufti tried to attack us," said another senior Congress leader, who is also a legislator. He is confident that Congress party has an edge in Jammu and now they are focusing on Kashmir valley after Kargil victory. "Morale of Congress cadets is very high and time is not far away when Congress party will emerge as winner in all three regions of the state. People are reposing faith on us and we expect the same trend in Parliament and Assembly elections as well," the Congress leader added. Despite losing the Kargil polls, a senior NC leader is busy in wooing independent councillors in Kargil but so far he is not able to make most of it. He has only wooed one councillor but his return to Congress party is obvious. |
