Political analysts, supporters ridicule Jabbar's decision to join NC
9/6/2013 10:28:36 PM
ET Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 6: Though dejected in Congress which failed to rehabilitate him politically during last 10 years of its rule in the State, the shifting of loyalty to National Conference (NC) after resigning from Congress is considered a politically immature decision by his supporters and friends in Ganderbal Assembly segment. Ishfaq Jabbar who had got 6000 votes in last Assembly elections had a good public image but he was feeling dejected after the failure of congress leadership to rehabilitate him during last 10 years of its rule in the State. According to sources Jabbar's financial position had also weekend over the years and despite his high expectations the Congress Party failed to adjust him suitably. Sources said being the close confidant of the Congress president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, Jabbar was hopeful that he would get him adjusted as head of any public sector organization and despite the umpteen efforts of Prof Soz to get him appointed as Chairman Khadi and Village Board, the same did not materialize due to pulls and pressures from other Party men who were totally against the move. This attitude of some Party men irritated and dejected Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar who decided to say good bye to Congress and join the bandwagon of Omar Abdullah despite the Abdullah dynasty and Sheikh Jabar family were rivals since 1983 after father of Ishfaq Jabbar the then senior leader of NC and former Minister Sheikh Abdul Jabbar took a banner of revolt against the then Chief Minister and patriarch of the Party Dr Farooq Abdullah and resigned from it to shift his loyalty to brother in-law of Dr Abdullah G M Shah's Awami National Conference (ANC). This led to a vertical split in NC as 12 MLAs resigned from the Party and joined the ANC led by Khalida Shah wife of GM Shah who framed the next government in the State in 1984 with the support of Congress.
Later Sheikh Jabbar was killed by terrorists in early nineties after militancy gripped the State and his son ishfaq Jabbar joined Congress for his rehabilitation in politics. But during the last 10 years of sharing a coalition Government in the State Congress could not rehabilitate ishfaq which dejected him most and forced him to join the Party against which his father had revolted earlier. However the decision is seen as an immature step by supporters of junior Shikh Jabbar and political analysts in the State who feel that the future of ishfaq was bleak in NC than in Congress. Ridiculing the decision, the political analysts said that alone in Ganderbal he has to face strong NC men like former Chief Secretary and MLC Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Ghulam Ahmed Saloora, Mohammed Yousf Bhat and Abdul Rehman Mir who are looking for their rehabilitation for last three decades. Except Sheikh Ghulam Rasool who was elected MLC by the Party other leaders are wandering for their rehabilitation and they will never allow ishfaq to take lead to them come what may. In comparison to this he had no such immediate rivals in Congress and if maintained patience and remained in the Party the future could have been bright for him in Congress than NC feel poltical observers.
