Jammu, Sept 6: In keeping with the practice of making a demand for the sake of a demand, the opposition parties are once again in race, this time asking for CBI probe into ugly affairs of sexual exploitation of young girls in a privately run Home for mentally retarded at Channi Rama. Reaction to the extent of condemnation and severe criticism to what unfolded two days back in Jammu is only expected and natural from all quarters . The demand amid this condemnation for CBI inquiry not only looks pre mature but also irrelevant in this matter, given the nature of the case as also swift action by the Police.
It is perhaps for the first time that the Government took a serious note of the matter and police took a quick action in nabbing Director and Chowkidar of the Home, within hours after revelations came to fore. It is learnt that Deputy Commissioner Jammu sometime back set up a team to look into the matter after it received a complaint that things were not in healthy state in the said Home. While the two key persons said to be involved and aware of whatever unpleasant was happening in the Home , have been arrested , the final outcome of the investigation is awaited and may take some time, there is a demand from one of parties in opposition BJP to have a probe initiated by CBI. There is nothing wrong in making a demand for probe by CBI but the politicians and parties should know it well that this doesn't apply for all cases and in all the circumstances.
As has been witnessed in such cases, the CBI enquiry holds water and ground in the cases usually when the Government departments or its functionaries are implicated in acts of omission and commission . Moreover, the demand for CBI enquiry into any case also holds some strength and relevance when people in general and opposition gets this impression that Government is trying to shield or protect its men or image and is not acting a manner as a result of which axe would fall on real culprits. In this particular case, which indeed is a heinous crime in itself, the Government again for the first time took a prompt cognizance and did not lose time in nabbing the key persons , indicating that the Government , prima facie is not trying to dither or avoid action. Moreover, it is only a matter of two days and a final outcome of police investigation cannot be expected in matter of few hours.
The parties in such cases jump into conclusions on hypothetical basis and can be seen more in race of one upmanship in asking for CBI enquiry or resignations in other such cases. |
